Honors Senior English 2019
Over the course of the summer, you will read two novels closely and write one literary analysis paper comparing and contrasting the two in terms of one major literary element.
Read Graham Greene’s The Power and the Glory and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. I would encourage you to have a physical copy of the novels so that you can write in them and take notes on perspective, narration, characterization, plot, and ultimately themes. Let me know if you have questions about these literary elements.
Below you will find resources for each novel.
To complete your project, you will write a 1000 word, MLA-style paper responding to one of the following prompts:
Compare and contrast one main character’s motivations from each of your two works. (In what ways are their motivations similar? And in which ways are they different?)
Compare and contrast the point of view or narration style of your two works. The timeline is objective, but the way the story is told in a novel or on stage is up to the point of view or narration of a work. (How are the narration/point view similar, and how are they different?)
Compare and contrast the central theme of each work. (How do your two works convey similar ideas, and what differentiates the ideas conveyed through literary features in each work?)
Be sure to provide support for your analysis using textual evidence which will be properly cited using MLA-style parenthetical citations. We will go over this during the first week of class, but you should have a draft finished before the first day of classes.
You will find resources for writing papers linked on the AP Literature and Composition Summer Project page.
